Sloth, apathy, despair get in the way. I can so identify with these attributes and yet they never made it into my step 4. Awareness comes first and that is what is good about today.
I am constantly reminded of shortcomings through my awareness. A really good fourth step book is Blueprint for Progress. Long and detailed but worth it.
Yep, awareness comes even before "admission"...when I first begin to see another defect, and say to myself, "OMG, is that the way I REALLY am?"
